What Does The Bible Say About Cremation?

Even just a few decades ago, it seems unlikely that someone would turn to the Bible for guidance on whether or not they could (or should) be cremated after death. In the intervening period of time, however, cremation has enjoyed a steady and steep increase in preference and acceptance. Today, there are many people who are asking the question, “What does the Bible say about cremation?”

In short, the Bible says nothing about cremation, with regard to whether or not it is an acceptable or banned practice. Despite this fact, certain religions do have a prohibition on the practice for their adherents. Eastern Orthodox religions and traditional Jewish practitioners, along with some of the more fundamental Christian denominations, are among those whose faith does not allow for cremation.

In the Old Testament of the Bible, a person was considered dishonored if they did not receive a ground burial. Many modern day theologians cite this fact as why they believe cremation is unacceptable in their faith. In Christianity, the belief is that those who are buried traditionally will be able to rise from their earthly body to a spiritual body when Jesus calls them to heaven. In fact, the body that is traditionally buried will eventually break down to its most natural state in much the same way that a cremation reduces the human form to dust and bone. Cremation simply breaks the human body down at a much faster rate than a whole body that is buried in the ground.

Another argument that contravenes the “earthly body to spiritual body” concept is that it seemingly damns anyone who, by accident, was taken from us as a result of a house or other structure fire. Those that died this way and were in large part reduced to ash and bone surely are afforded the same spiritual reward as those whose death was natural and whose body was then committed to the Earth.

There are many reasons why cremation has gained acceptance in the past few decades:

  • Cremation provides a substantial cost savings over a traditional burial
  • Societal mobility makes it difficult for one to be buried where other family members are buried
  • Cremation provides multiple final disposition options above and beyond what a traditional burial can provide
  • A growing number of people are offended at the idea of decaying in the ground

From a purely biblical perspective, your faith is maintained if you opt for a cremation rather than a traditional burial. Aside from a few anecdotal references, there really is no teaching in the Bible that prohibits the act of cremation.
