Scattering cremated remains in Washington State

Where you can scatter cremated remains in Washington State:
•    From Washington State Ferries, based on weather conditions. Call 206-515-3460.
•    In National Parks with a permit from the chief ranger.
•    On state trust uplands by the Washington State Department of Resources, with permission from the regional manager.
•    In all navigable waters including public waters, including: public rivers, streams and lakes, Puget Sound and the Pacific Ocean (within the three-mile limit). Permitted by the Washington State Dept. of Ecology.
•    In the Pacific beyond the three-mile limit, scatterings shall be reported within 30 days to the Regional Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection  Agency, Region 10, 1200 Sixth Ave., Seattle, WA 98101.
•    On private land. Requires permission from the owner.


Protocol for scattering:
•    When scattering cremated remains, do not leave or drop the full container or urn of ashes in any location. Dispose of the container separately. Similarly, dispose separately of the label on the outside of the container and the identification tag inside.

You may NOT scatter cremated remains:
•    In Washington State parks.
•    In Washington Natural Area Preserves or Natural Resource Conservation Areas.
•    On highways
